Under the old girder bridge which once carried the railway to the iron mines lies this wonderful little rapid, where the water spills in to a deep emerald pool. Grey Wagtails and Dippers flit from rock to rock and Red squirrels are often sighted in the trees above.
A little way down stream are the stepping stones which link the church to the far bank. Just how long the stones have been there is not known but they probably predate most of the bridges on the river.
Saint Catherine's Church is situated in a beautiful spot by the river at Boot. The site dates back at least to the 6th Century, but the church was rebuilt in the 19th Century.
Looking down the valley of the Esk with the Roman Fort in the fore ground. The 1st Century fort is easily reached from a lay by half way up Hardnott Pass. The fort is well preserved with descriptive plaques telling the history of the fort. Admission is free
Harter fell Harter Fell in winter conditions with local Herdwick sheep tinged red by the traditional application of "show red" which is used to improve the appearance of the sheep during competitions and shows.
Dalegarth Falls can be found deep in Stanley Gill, a well trodden footpath leads up the gill to the falls, crossing the beck several times. The upper section of the walk is not for the unsteady as it is rather steep and sometimes slippery, but the sight and sound of the falls is well worth the walk. From Dalegarth station the falls are a 20-40 minute walk.
